Giving Calendar

We understand that most families live on a budget and fundraisers for school can be unwelcome surprises. To help you plan any very appreciated gifts for the 2015-2016 school year, here is a rough outline of the big fundraisers for Birney for next year:

  • Fall Fundraiser starts October 12th! Students will be coming home with catalogs; 45-54% of the item price goes to the Birney PTA. Students have the opportunity to earn prizes (even with just one item ordered); students who sell 20 items or more will get time on the Game Truck during the school day. Online ordering will come soon.

  • November 6, 2015: Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the American Heart Association

  • Fall 2015: Scrip Gift Cards. Families purchase gift cards for such retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Home Depot, Jamba Juice, Pottery Barn, Sephora, and Target, and a percentage of each sale goes back to Birney.

  • December 17, 2015: FOABE's Big Give, a one-day online event where hopefully donations will be matched

  • January 25-29, 2016: Shoe drive during the Great Kindness Challenge Week

  • March 11, 2016: Birney's Run for the Green, the school's annual Jogathon, where students may win prizes for raising funds, including the coveted Run for the Green T-shirt

There will be other fundraising events, such as Family Dinner Nights and Parents Nights' Out, but these are the specific times when we will be reaching out to the community for funds.

Birney teachers also use to solicit specific contributions for projects for their classrooms. Click here to see the list of all the Birney projects (opens new window).

What do these funds go for? The PTA covers items like:

  • Field trips, like trips to Oma's Pumpkin Patch, the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego County Fair, the Natural History Museum, the Midway Museum, Legoland, Junior Theater, Mission Trails, the County Courthouse, and Roosevelt Middle School
  • Educational assemblies, like those created by Play it Safe, Heritage Tours, Colonial Presentations, La Jolla Playhouse, and Mad Science
  • Playground Play Dates, where kids run free on the playground while parents hang out
  • Annual Passport to Adventure school festival
  • Supplemental classroom materials, such as vocabulary workbooks for kindergartners, planning agendas for fifth graders, and supplies for PE and art
FOABE funds the "Specials," the classes which supplement the bare-bones curriculum funded by the District and allow us to remain a PYP IB World School. These classes also give our classroom teachers time to meet and collaborate as teaching teams to provide the best possible education for our students:
  • IB fees
  • Spanish
  • Art
  • Library
  • Garden
